The Ten Most Anticipated Movies of 2018
2018 is shaping up to be one of the most diverse years in movie history. With exciting new features coming out every month, and so little time to enjoy every new movie coming out this year, here are just some of the films we are excited are finally coming out this year.
“Pacific Rim: Uprising”- March 23
Let’s face it, no one thought “Pacific Rim” would get a sequel, must less one starring John Boyega, but in 2018 anything is possible. Picking up where the last movie left off, Boyega and the rest of his crew will once again tackle a giant monster coming out of the sea the only way they could, in giant robots called Jaegers. “Pacific Rim: Uprising” is sure to please fans of the 2013 film who have been waiting years for a sequel, and might even spark some new fans who might be interested to see how the franchise grows.
“Ready Player One”- March 29
Based on the best selling book of the same name by Ernest Cline, this upcoming sci-fi epic is sure to bring a sense of nostalgia to anyone who watches it. Directed by Steven Speilberg, “Ready Player One” puts the director back at the helm of the genre that made him famous, and rightfully so. The film’s source material will be full to the brim with 1980’s sci-fi references, many of which Speilberg himself is responsible for bringing to life. Time will tell if this movie can do its source material justice, but one thing is for sure, the world will be watching to see some movie magic happen.
“Avengers: Infinity Wars”- May 4
All of our favorite heroes come together on the big screen to fight their greatest villain yet: Thanos. With this galactic threat looming over Earth, saying people are excited about this movie would be an understatement at best. For nearly a decade, moviegoers and Marvel fans have been waiting for the cinematic universe to tackle Thanos, but also to create a character-driven story with this many roles. This film will also mark the first time, the Guardians of the Galaxy meet up with the Avengers on Earth, and while most of the film is shrouded in secrecy, one thing is for certain, this movie will be a major game changer in superhero history, if not in film history.
“The Incredibles 2”- June 15
Fans have been waiting 14 years for the sequel to this Pixar classic, and now the wait is almost over. Picking up where the previous film left off, the movie will focus on Mrs. Incredible’s (aka Elastic Girl) foray into the world of crime fighting. While the film will once again show our favorite superhero family on screen, along with a few new faces, it is sure to stay in our hearts for a long time, much like the original, and provide the same quality filmmaking Pixar has shown to be the masters of time and time again.
“Ocean’s 8”- June 8
The female focus spinoff based on the popular “Ocean’s 11” franchise is sure to please moviegoers who may want a little deviation from the string of summer blockbusters heading our way. Sandra Bullock leads the all-female team with Cate Blanchett by her side. Rounded out this diverse cast is Rhiannon, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway. This film is shaping to be a homage to the heist movies we all know and love while providing some well-needed laughs along the way.
“Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again”- July 20
Based on the music of the famous Swedish music group ABBA, this sequel of the 2008 film “Mamma Mia”, is one of the many movie sequels coming out this year nearly a decade after the original release. The film will feature the original cast once again portraying the roles we all loved them for, as well as some new faces. Lily James will portray a young Donna during the films flashbacks to her youth, filling in Meryl Steeps big shoes, while Cher will join the Cast as Donna’s Mother. The soundtrack is sure to be a hit, as the film will once again feature the hits that made ABBA famous.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story”- May 25
Not much is known about this upcoming Star Wars prequel, and the closer we get to the May release date, the less faith moviegoers have in this stand-alone film being another hit for Lucas Films. However, despite the uncertainty surrounding this movie, as well as the troubled film production, many fans are excited to see the adventures of a young Han Solo and hope that actor Alden Ehrenreich will have what it takes to step out of Harrison Ford’s large shadow. But for now, we wait for the days until we can at least get a teaser for this highly anticipated movie.
“Black Panther”- February 16
Ever since Black Panther made his screen debut in Captain America: Civil War, fans have been waiting for a Black Panther movie. With its February release just around the corner, “Black Panther” is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest releases to date. The movie has already broken online ticket records, selling the highest amount of tickets in 24 hours for a Marvel film. With director Ryan Coogler, best known for directing Creed, and a diverse cast lead by Chadwick Boseman, and featuring Lupita Nyong’o, and Michael B. Jordan, this movie is sure to bring a new excitement to the superhero genre.
“A Wrinkle in Time”- March 9
A reimagining of a timeless classic, “A Wrinkle in Time” might have a lot to live up to, but Director Ava DuVernay is no doubt shaping this material into her own vision. With a cast that includes the one and only Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling as the Witches, and newcomer Storm Reid as Meg Murray, this movie is sure to appeal to moviegoers of all ages.
“Deadpool 2”- May 18
2016’s “Deadpool” might have been a sleeper hit when it was first released, but the 2o18 sequel to the hit superhero comedy is facing to be the Merc with the Mouth’s biggest movie yet. While not much is known about the plot at this time, besides the addition of fan-favorite character Cable played by Josh Brolin, Ryan Reynold is back as Wade Wilson and is sure to bring all the gritty humor we loved from the first film. This is the first of many sequels we hope this character gets in his film career and we cannot wait for the magic from the first film to be revived again.
