Plans For A New Basketball Arena Have Been Released
Plans for a new basketball arena for UT men and women’s basketball teams were announced last Friday by University President Gregory Fenves. Unfortunately, the new arena would also mean farewell to the Frank Erwin Center, where basketball games have been held since 1977.
At the meeting, along with the university’s Development Board, President Fenves said he expects the new arena to be open within the next five to seven years. Unfortunately, neither the layout or the cost of the arena has been released.
“The campus master plan developed in 2012 called for the land under the Erwin Center to be used for future expansion of the Dell Medical School and the UT Health District,” Fenves said to the Development Board. “As we prepare for that, we will also ensure that our outstanding men’s and women’s basketball programs can continue to compete in a great arena.”
The new arena will replace one of the parking lots for students with a class C permit, Lot 70, which is south of the Mike A. Myers Stadium and east of the Recreational Sports Center. However, placing the arena here is expected to make it easier on both the fans and the players to make it to the games, said Fenves.
“Coaches Karen Aston and Shaka Smart want the next facility to be on campus, where it is easier for our student-athletes to travel between their dorms, classes and practice,” Fenves said. “It also makes the games more accessible to our student fans.”
