The Best Way To Treat Yo’ Self In Austin

Over winter break, I’m proud (ish) to say I watched all seven seasons of Parks and Recreation on Netflix. Although two rounds of strep throat did keep me bedridden, I would recommend it to any fan of shows like The Office or Arrested Development for two reasons:

Reason #1: It’s freakin’ hilarious.

Reason #2: The characters Tom and Donna devised one of the best methods for anyone to stay happy: “Treat Yo’ Self Day,” a day dedicated to doing you.

It sounds like a selfish endeavor, but in reality everyone needs a day where they can step back and say, “Imma do me today.” It can be every Monday of the month or only once a year, but having a Treat Yo’ Self day is a must.

As a result of my avid Netflix-and-chillin’ (but without the chill), here are a few ways to kick your Treat Yo’ Self day off right.

1. Eat Whatever Your Heart Desires.

Maybe you’ve been craving a mouthwatering Moojo cookie sandwich for the past month, or perhaps it’s just the bag of Flavor-Blasted Goldfish eyeing you at the CVS on Guad. Whatever it is, remember: this is the day where you do you. And if that’s eating a fresh-cut apple or an entire roll of Thin Mints (no shame), then so be.

2. Get ACTIVE!

If you’re a true Austininte, you know that Zilker is the place to be to stretch your legs, especially on the glorious 70-degree-weather winter days we’ve been having. Laying out in the sunlight with a nice book and a good friend is a great way to relax and forget the stresses of day-to-day life. In addition, Zilker is right next to the running trail, so grab a buddy, go on a quick walk or jog by Town Lake and get those endorphins going. Staying active will not only keep you in shape, but also allow your mind to decompress from the chaos of the UT campus.

3. Shop ‘Til You Drop

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing better than buying a cute new pair of shoes to get me amped about my day. In Parks & Rec, Donna and Tom (the creators of “Treat Yo’ Self”) frequently treated this day as a shopping occasion, so don’t be afraid to splurge on some new swag or even just buy something for a loved one that sends positive vibes.

4. Say “Ommmmm”

You would be surprised at how rarely you actually take the time to sit down and take a deep breath. Apps like Calm walk you through various meditation exercises so you can treat yo’ self to some nice, calm breathing, even if it’s only for five minutes out of the day. You also can never go wrong with a quick yoga break at Black Swan or even at your friend’s apartment by putting a couple of mats on the living room floor.

5. As always, do YOU.

Don’t forget: this day is for YOU, so do whatever makes YOU happy. The point of a “Treat Yo’ Self” day isn’t to make your friends or family or dog happy; the sole purpose is to spark some relaxation and happiness back into your life. It’s much harder to maintain joy than it is to find it, so I challenge you to eventually make everyday a day to treat your mind, body and soul right.

As Tom Haverford so eloquently put it, “Sometimes you got to work a little, so you can ball a lot.”
